Mastering definite articles is one of the most foundational steps in learning Spanish. Unlike English, which uses a single word ("the"), Spanish requires you to match the article to the noun's gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural).
This drag-and-drop exercise tests your ability to quickly identify the correct article, el, la, los, or las, using everyday vocabulary in complete sentences. Look closely at the noun in each sentence, determine its gender and number, and drag the matching article into the blank space.

Tips for Spanish Definite Articles
To master definite articles, keep these essential grammatical rules in mind while you practice:
- Look at the endings: generally, nouns ending in "-o" are masculine (el perro, el libro), and those ending in "-a" are feminine (la casa, la mesa). But don't forget, when talking about gender in Spanish, there are several important exceptions.
- Pluralization rules: to make a word plural, you must change el to los and la to las. If the noun ends in a vowel, simply add "-s" (e.g., la chica becomes las chicas). If it ends in a consonant, add "-es" (e.g., la flor becomes las flores).
- Read the Whole Sentence: Sometimes context provides the answer. If you see an adjective like rápido (masculine singular) describing the noun coche, it confirms you must use the masculine singular article el.
