How to say “it hurts” in Spanish

Imagine you go one day to Spain in your holidays and you eat too much paella and drink too much sangría… or you go to Mexico and eat too many tacos… :/ and then, all of a sudden, a terrible stomach pain appears. You need to go to a nearby drugstore or hospital in order to get some pills and feel better, but before getting the pills you need to explain to the pharmacist or doctor what hurts you. Then, you remember that lesson in that random but awesome website that explained how to say “it hurts” in Spanish and how to talk about pain and sickness in this language. And thanks to that lesson, you manage to get the proper medication and continue happy and healthy with your vacation days 🙂
Well, with this situation what I was trying to say is that all this stuff and vocabulary may be very useful for you one day, so please, take note!

The basic structure to say what hurts you in Spanish it is built with the verb doler, and it is the following:
me duele(n) + definite article + body part.

For example, if you have a headache, you would say: me duele la cabeza.

And if your eyes hurt, you would say: me duelen los ojos.

But, how we do know if we have to use duele or duelen? Well, think about the body part that hurts you. Is it a single part, like the head? Or it is more than one part, like the eyes, the teeth or the legs?
If it is a single part, use the verb form duele, because this is the 3rd singular person of the verb doler. And if two or more body parts hurt you, use the form duelen, which is the 3rd plural person of that verb.

Colours in Spanish

We are going to see the colours, in Spanish los colores. See this colorful panel below. If you click on the colour, you will see a “label” with the name of the colour and at the same time you will hear the Spanish pronunciation of that name.

As you have seen, these colours are:

rojo – red
naranja – orange
amarillo – yellow
verde – green
azul – blue
rosa – pink
morado – purple
marrón – brown
negro – black
blanco – white
gris – grey/gray

And… how do we say that a colour is dark or light?

Well, if you want to say that a colour is dark, follow this structure: name of the colour + oscuro
And if you want to say that a colour is light, follow the same structure: name of the colour + claro

For example, the colour dark blue in Spanish is azul oscuro. You can see that we use the adjective oscuro after the name of the colour. And to say light blue, we use the adjective claro after the name of the colour, azul claro. It’s easy, isn’t it? 😉

How to write about the weather in Spanish: basic structures

There are some general  structures that you may follow when writing sentences in Spanish related to weather. We are going to see four different structures:

  1. How to describe the current and general weather conditions. In most cases we will use a form of the verb hacer (hace) + noun; the verb “hacer” will be in its impersonal form, which is the 3rd person in singular. For example: hace + frío/calor/viento.
  2. How to say the current temperature in Spanish. In this case we have to use the 3rd person in singular of the verb HABER, which is hay. The structure is hay + number of degrees + grados. For example, we want to say the current temperature in Lime (Peru), we would say: Hay 23 grados en Lima.
  3. How to say that a specific weather condition is happening right now. In Spanish, if we want to say that something is happening right now, we use the verb estar + following verb in gerundio. This is the same in English, because we say “it is snowing”, using the verb to be + the following verb in gerund. In Spanish we would say: Está nevando.
  4. How to say that a specific weather condition is going to happen imminently or in the near future. For this case we use the 3rd person in singular of the verb IR (va) + preposition a + weather verb in infinitive. If it is going to rain, in Spanish we say va a llover.

As you have seen, talking about the weather in Spanish is simple, specially if you talk English, since the sentence structures have many similarities in both languages. However, to learn all the phrases, verbs, adjetives… related to the weather in Spanish, it is highly recommended to practise with exercises.
