Grammar Tips: The "Estar + Gerund" Formula
To get a perfect score on these games, you must remember the golden formula for the present progressive tense: Conjugated ESTAR + Gerund.
Step 1: Conjugate Estar
Make sure you know the present tense of estar by heart: estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, están.
Step 2: Form the Gerund (-ing)
Drop the infinitive ending of your action verb and add the correct suffix:
- -AR Verbs: add -ando (e.g., Hablar ⮕ Hablando / Speaking).
- -ER & -IR Verbs: add -iendo (e.g., Comer ⮕ Comiendo / Eating).
Step 3: Watch Out for the "Y" Trap!
If the stem of an -ER or -IR verb ends in a vowel, the -iendo changes to -yendo to avoid having three vowels in a row. Keep an eye out for this spelling trap in our games!
- Leer ⮕ Leyendo (Reading)
- Oír ⮕ Oyendo (Hearing)
